FRENCH RECRUITS FOR THE BRITISH ARMY.
Recruiting sergeants at Trafalgar square, London, are just now being puzzled by the advent of a new class of raw material in the shape of young French candidates, hardly able to speak a word of English, but strangely anxious to volunteer for immediate service at the front. A case in point occurred when a smart young Frenchman accosted one of the veterans of a crack cavalry regiment on duty near the National Gallery, and with some difficulty made known his desire to serve the King in Sonth Africa. His papers were perfectly in order, and he came direct from the cavalry school at Saumur, where he had gained one of the six medals annually awarded to the best among the competitors from all the cavalry regiments of France. The astonished veteran, when he had somewhat recovered his equanimity, politely referred the candidate to other quarters. The young Frenchman asserted that on receipt of a wire announcing that he has been accepted no fewer than forty of his comrades will leave Paris in order to follow his example. They are still waiting -for that wire.—'Birmingham Daily Post.'
