The languages in which the inscription is written are Greek and Palmyrene, and it is supposed to deal with the Custome tariff in force in the third century of our era. The stone was discovered some years ago, but owing to its great size it was found impossible to move it. It was therefore cut- into three parts, and the inscription was carefully removed from each of them. Palmyra was in those days a place of great commercial importance, and the tariff should he interesting. Of all the newspapers published in the world 68 per cent, are in the English language.
