A coronation robe of purple velvet embroidered with 2CO ounces of gold, that cost George IV. £3OO, was knocked down for £55. A green velvet mantle lined with ermine that cost £1,050 was sold for £125. A pair of fine kid trousers lined with white satin sold for 12s, These prices were obtained by an auctioneer of the name of Phillips who in 1831 waa entrusted with the sale of 120 lote of clothing from the wardrobe of George IV. The question » what became of them then? There ib no use for second-hand coronation robes, as such, and it is more than probable that the velvet that covered the back of the King wa% used to decorate the hat or some other article of attire worn by one of the mo«t ordinary of his subjects.
