OLUTRA HACK HA CI V, Tho fourth annual gathering of theClutha Hack Racing Club was held on the Reserve, Balclutha on Friday afternoon, and was a; everv respect a complete success. A large number of licensed “ bookies ” were present, and speculation seemed to be brisk. The races were very evenly contested, and the only “ boil-over ” was in the Shorts Handicap. The Committee were indefatigable in attending to the interests of the public. The following are the results : HURDLE RACE. Mile and a-half.—Mr W. Allan's Forest King (11.10,VV.Allan, juu.) 1. Mr W. Kirk's Pompei (10.0) 2. Mr ‘Thomas Hogg's Sweet Pea (10.0) 3. Forest King led ail the way, and won by about twenty lengths. Time, ornin lls-ec. Betting : 4 to 1 on Forest King, 4 to 1 against Pumped and Sweet Pea. MAIDEN PLATE. Abrml six furlongs. —Mr ■!. Campbell's Ladysmith (9.6, 11. Cotton) 1, Mr A. Alison's Emwah (9.10) 2, Mr A. Smith’s Lilian (9.2) 3. Also started ; .Mack (10.5), Woodworm (9.6). Nancy Tell (9.5). Cajoler (9.2), Battlesong (9.0).’ Cajoler led fur four furlongs, when Ladysmith took command, and won by three lengths [nun .Emwah, a length separating second and third. Time, liuin 22i,sec. .Betting; Evens Mack, 6 to 1 against Ladysmith. CLUTHA CUP. One mile.—Mr A. Twaddle's Jjit tie Bob (11.9, C. Hope) 1, Mr W. Allan’s Forest King (10.5) 2, Mr J. Campbell’s Lady Teddington i 9.5) 3. Also started; Tommy (10.12), Weo Lad (9.12), Emwah (9.5), Whakawhiti (9.0). Forest King and Wee Lad kept in the lead until six furlongs had been covered, when Little Bob put in a challenge, and won by half a length, with the third close up. Time. Imin Oosec. Betting : 2tol on Little Bob. HANDICAP TROT. Two miles.—Mr A. Allan’s Osprey (53see. G. Baltimore) 1, Mr J. Hughes’s Benconsfield (15sec) 2, Mr H. Little’s Taipo (ICsec) 5. Also started : Hulda (scratch', Billy (23sec), Sparkle (55seel, Uncle Tom (43seti, Jack (45sec), Jim (4osee), The Clown (43sec). Time, smin 56sec. Won easily by twenty lengths, a length between the other placed horses. Betting; Even Osprey and Taipo, 3to 1 Beacon.-field.
FLYING HANDICAP. Six furlongs.— Air W. Fitzgerald’s Marigold (10.12, C Hope) 1, Mr W. Allan’s Forest King (10.6) 2, Mr J. Campbells Lady Teddington (10.4) Also started: Tommy ((11.1), Marigold, in whom odds of 3 to 1 were laid, won hard held by half a length. Time, Imin 24isee.
HANDICAP TROT. One mile.—Mr W. Little’s Taipo (ssec, A. Pringle) 1, Mr J. M’DonnelTs Barnego (18sec) 2, Mr J. Hughes’s Benconsiield (7see) 3. Taipo assumed command at the end of four furlongs, and won by ten lengths. Time, 2min 52sec. A protest for inconsistent running was dismissed. Betting; 2 to 1 against Taipo, 7 to 1 Barnego, 4 to 1 Beaconsfield.
SHORTS HANDICAP. Four furlongs. —Mr S. Townley’s Wee laid (10.5, R. Townley) 1, Mr W. Fitzgerald’s Marigold (11.7) 2, Mr A. Smith’s Lilian (9.6) 3. Also started: Emperor (10.5) and Hulda (9.11). From a good start Wee Lad soon took the lead, but had to be ridden to stave off Marigold's challenge. Time, 55sec. Belting: 5 to 1 against Wee Lad, 4 to 1 on Marigold. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Six fur-longs.-Air J. Landel's Woodworm (9.0, M. Allan) 1, Air A. Richardson’s Tommy (10,4) 2, Air W. M’Phee’s Alack (10.5) 3. Also started: Lady Teddington (9.12), Emwah (9.8), Whakawhiti (9.0), Cajoler (9.0), Nancy Tell (9.0), Battlesong (9.0), Pompei (9.0). Woodworm was never headed, hut only lasted long enough to stave off Tommy’s challenge by a nose; half a length between second and third. Time, Ipiin 26sec. Betting: 2to 1 against Mack, 3 to 1 Tommy, 4 to 1 against Woodworm.
The Oakleigh Purse, five and .vhalf furlongs, inn at Caulfield on Sautrday, resulted as follows: —.Moonbeam .1, Staton 2 Eleanor 5. Betting : 2 In 1 against Eleanor, 6 to 1 Aloonbeam. Won by a length. Time. Imin BJsec. At the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club’s annual sports at the Te Aro baths cm Saturday Al. E. Champion easily defeated F. Roberts and G. A. Wilkes in the Wellington Centre Championship of 100 yards, putting up the record time for New Zealand of Imin 4^-sec.
