ADELAIDE'S TRAMWAYS.

LABOR OPPOSITION DEFEATED. Press Association—By Telegraph—CoyprighL. ADELAIDE, February 9. A referendum of ratepayers upon the Act recently passed by Parliament to hand the trams over to private enterprise for conversion to the electrical system resulted iu the Act being approved by a majority of 6,000. The Labor party, who favored nationalisation of the tramways, were badly defeated. [The firm of Noyes Bros, will carry out the above contract. The opposition the proposal had to overcome in Parliament was chiefly from the Labor representatives, who stonewalled the measure for three months. The system will consist of about sixty-six miles of electric tramways. The price paid the private companies was over £400,000. The entire system, when reconstructed, will cost about a million and a-quarter sterling. Mr Noyes, who is at present in Dunedin, Informs us that his advices state that the proposal was carried by two to one.]
