LATE COMMERCIAL.

THE AGENT-GENERAL’S REPORT. WELLINGTON. February 10. The following cablegram has been received from the Agent-General, London, dated the Bth “ Average prices to-day: Canterbury mutton, 3£cl ; Dunedin, Southland, and N.M.E. Company, sid; other North Island, sjd; River Plate, 3id. The

mutton market is weak, and the trade in mutton is very disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand for New Zealand. Canterbury Lamb, ssd. The high quotations for lamb lately sent to New Zealand were merely for a few selected carcasses, and cannot be taken, as any indication of the general market price. The shipments of River Plate lamb are increasing. and the Australian shipments of lamb now arriving arc very heavy. Tffe beef market is firm. New Zealand hinds, ; fores, There is a good demand for butter at 109s. New Zealand butter is giving satisfaction to buyers. The cheese market is firm at 50s. The hemp market is very firm. “ Good fair ‘Wellington ” : Spot, £37; March and May shipments, £35. There is no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week.”

PROPERTY SALE. Messrs Park, Reynolds, and Co., in conjunction with the Perpetual Trustees and Agency Company, submitted in two lots the suburban property at Green Island known as “ Woodeatnn ”at auction to-day. Lot i, containing 102 acres, was passed in, the price not being up to the vendor’s reserve. Lot 2 was keenly competed for, the bidding starting at £2OO and rapidly advancing to £440, at which figure it fell to Mr J. J. Hewitt. There was a good attendance of buyers, and inquiries for property were numerous.

GRAN AND PRODUCE REPORT. Dalgctv and Co., Dunedin, report having held their usual weekly auction sate today before a fair attendance of buyers. Bidding was fairly spirited, and prices ruled as under : Oats.—There Is a fair demand for milling, but feed lines are neglected by shippers, who are not operating, as the new' season’s crop is offering at lower rates in Northern ports. The local demand, however, absorbs nearly all on offer. Prime milling, 2s 6d to 2s 6£d ; good to best feed, 2s to 2s 6d ; inferior to medium, 2a 2d to 2s 4d (bags extra). Wheat. —There is little business passing, stocks being low, while millers are holding off in the meantime pending harvest operations. Medium quality is readily sold ; R fowl feed, which still continues to meet a good sale. Prime velvet and Tuscan, 3s Id to 3s 2d ; medium and whole fowl feed, 3s to 3s Id ; broken and damaged, 2s 91 to 2s lid (bags extra). Potatoes,—Supplies have been coming forward freely, and prices have declined considerably. Prime kidneys, £2 6s to £2 10s ; medium, £2 to £2 2s 6d (bags in). Chaff. —Consignments are heavier, and prices are back to-day about 5s a ton. Prime oaten sheaf meets a good demand, but medium quality is very plentiful, and not in favor with buyers. Prime, £3 10s to £5 15s; medium, £3 to £3 5s (hags extra).

Donald Reid and Co. report having held their weekly auction sale of grain and produce at their stores to-day. There was a good attendance of buyers, but competition for most of the lots catalogued was without much animation, prices for nearly all lines being barely equal to late values. Oats. —Consignments have been coming forward more freely. Late values are 100 high to allow shippers to operate, and the quantity coming to hand being fully equal to local demand, prices are a shade easier. We quote : Prime milling, 2s 6d to 2s good to best feed, 2s 6d to 2s 6d : medium, 2s 5d to 2s 4d per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat —Prime milling is the only class in demand with millers, and even for this their requirements are light. Medium quality is in fair demand as fowl feed. We quote; Prime milling, 5s Id to 3s 2£d; medium, 5s to 5s Id per bushel (sacks extra).

Potatoes. —The market is heavily supplied, and prices have in consequence suffered a decline. We quote: Best sorts, £2 5s to £2 10s; medium, £1 15s to £2 per ton (bags extra). Chaff.—Prime oaten sheaf continues to meet with fair inquiry, but medium quality is in over-supply, and difficult to quit at slightly reduced" rates. We quote; Prime oaten sheaf, £3 15s to £3 17s 6d ; choice to £4; medium to good, £5 to £5 10s per ton (bags extra).
