THE MANUFACTURE OF STARCH NOT A NUISANCE.
TO TUB EDITOR. Sir.—A letter appearing in this morning's ‘Times’ by one signing himself “ Lavender Water ” is very misleading, and tends to bring odium upon an industry (the first of its kind in the colony) that has been productive of good to both employer, employe, and the general public aline. With regard to the different processes of starch manufactured from rice Lavender Water” displays the greatest ignorance, and before rushing into print should have called on the manager and pointed out any defect or grievance, which, if possible, would have been rectified. However, the starch works are not the aggressor in this instance, and Mr Barron, the inspector, has repeatedly told the writer that the works reflect credit on the management during the last few years. As an earnest of the truth of my statement I would invite the health officer, inspector, or City Council—yea, even “ Lavender Water 7 ' —to inspect the factory, and will abide by their ruling. I would also tell “Lavender Water” when next writing to the papers to attach his name; it is more manlv to do so.—l am., etc., Wm. B. M. Fka. February 10,
