WORK AND WAGES.
A BIG ORDER
REEFTON, February 10,
The Westland Trades and I/abor Council resolved to urge the Government to legislate that the Inspector of Mines be compelled to give fourteen days’ notice of his intention to allow Sunday work in mines; that the Workmen’s Wages Act be amended to allow a union to sue for wages due to members; that a labor member be appointed to tbe Westport Harbor Board, and that labor organisations have direct representation on the harbor boards of the colony; that airways, when stoppings are required, be of brick, and air gauges be put in manholes; that the Government be asked to make eight hours on five days a week and four on Saturday a compulsory day’s work where labor is regular and steady; that Government introduce tbe Referendum Bill; that a vote of the people be taken on the question of the abolishment of the Legislative Council; and that payment of jurors be equal to the amount tamed by jurors at their trade or profession. Mr Harvey was elected preside it, and it was resolved that, the next meeting be held at Westport in February, lAo
