CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Committee of the above was held yesterday afternoon, and attended by Messrs D. E.- Theomin (president), J. Moloney, H. Salmon, C. W. Rattray, R. M. Clark, and J. M. Gallaway. Sub-committees were appointed to consider correspondence with reference to compulsory adjustments of compasses by an officer appointed by the Marine Department, and. from the Department of Agriculture requesting the views of the Chamber as to the advisability of forwarding standard samples of different varieties of New Zealand wheat to the London. Corn Trade Association. It was resolved to telegraph to the delegates in Wellington with, reference to the matter of bank holidays. The sub-committee with reference to marks and brands reported advising that importers should be communicated with and requested to furnish specimens of import marks, to be registered both in the colony and in Wellington. A letter was received from Mr J. 'B. Waters, covering communication from South Africa with reference to the possibilities of trade between New Zealand and that countryMessrs Philip Isaacs (of D. Benjamin and Co.) and W. Stevenson (of Irvine and Stevenson) were elected members of the Chamber.

THE WELLINGTON CONFERENCE. At the meeting of the Chambers of Commerce Conference yesterday it was resolved, on the motion of Mr John Duthie (Wellington)—" That the subject of the unsatisfactory condition of the Australian bills of lading should be brought under the attention of the Government with a view to inducing Parliament to adopt legislation on the lines of the American law." On the motion of Mr C. Ellison (Napier), it was decided—"That the various Chambers of Commerce throughout New Zealand should be requested to further the interests of the London Chamber by reporting, with detailed particulars, all cases of pillaging of goods from oversea coming under then- notice."
