WOMEN MONEY-LENDERS.

Mrs J. M. MuHis, ft married woman, carrying cm business as a money-lender, under the name of “ The Standard Advance Office,” Sommer Terrace, Camberwell, sued at Lambeth County Court recently Harry Moss, a carman, to recover £2 9s, balance of money lent. In December last defendant borrowed £3 6s. He actually received £2 14s, as 12s was deducted as interest paid in advance. The agreement was that the £3 6s was to be repaid in 2s 6d weekly instalments, the first payment to be made seven days after the £2 14s vas received. Judge Emden said if persons over age chose deliberately to enter into agreements to pay exorbitant interest he conld not help them. (To plaintiff): Are you the Standard Advance Office? Plaintiff: That is what I call myself, and what I am registered as. Judge Emden: It is scandalous that people should be aDowed to use these titles. Money-lenders should be compelled to trade under their own names. If that was done in this case people would be warned off, because, of course, everyone knows women

money-lenders are worse than men. — (Laughter.) , , . Plaintiff; I only started business m November last, as I saw money-lenders were registered. Judge Emden : So the new Act, instead, of doing good, is doing harm by encouraging people to start Standard Advance Offices. Judgment was given for the amount claimed, less 6s paid as fines by defendant.
