DRAWING FROM THE LIVING MODEL.

MISS SALE’S STUDIO,

Miss Sale (a daughter of Professor Sale, of the Otago University, and an ei-Dun-eclin High School pupil) has just returned from the Old Country, where she has put in three years’ study in painting and drawing from the living model and casts. Her studies while at Home were conducted under the supervision of Mr Cope, R.A , and Mr Borough-Johnston, and previous to going Home she had special tuition from Miss Wimperis (of the Otago Girls’ High School). It is the intention of Miss Sale to commence the teaching of her profession in Dunedin as from Monday next, and with this object in view she is now exhibiting at her studio in Moray place specimens of her work from the model and cast while in England. Among the specimens of her work on the walls are the drawing which secured for her tho entry as a. free student at the Royal -Academy for three years, an advantage which Miss Sale was unfortunately unable to avail herself of. The exhibits reflect the greatest credit upon tho artistic faculty of -Miss Sale, whether viewed as finished pictures or as lightning charcoal sketches. As •showing the stringency of tho rules under which Miss Sale conducted her studies, it may he mentioned that from the poring of a living model she was compelled to execute a finished charcoal sketch, true in every particular, within twenty minutes, and was only allowed a day of five hours in which to complete a “ finished ” costumed picture. No retouching i-r after-work was allowed. Her work shows much caj’efiil study of every detail of her art., and her presence in this city as a teacher of this particular department should result in great benefit to those who, preparatory to proceeding abroad, desire to receive competent artistic preliminary and advanced tuition at their own doors.
