A SHOOTING AFFAIR.

Yesterday evening Charles Gatehouse, eighteen, was arrested by Constable Hastings, at Roslyn, on the charge of, on January 28, at Kaikorai Valley, discharging a certain firearm, to wit a pea rifle, at William M“Mcikan, with intent to do him serious bodily harm. It would appear that Gatehouse (who hails from Christchurch and came to Dunedin about a month ago), in company with four other younger lads, was in the vicinity of M'Meikan’s Orchard, and that the owner of the latter went to drive them away, giving special attention to Gatehouse, as the Goliath of the party. When MTVleikan got within 100 yards of Gatehouse it is alleged that the latter turned and fired two shots frjoi a pea rifle, which he was carrying, the bullets whistling uncomfortably close io M'Meakon’s body. The police had since been on the look-out for Gatehouse, and bo was arrested last night, when some of the. pea rifle cartridges were found in his possession. At tho dity Police Court this morning Gatehouse was brought before the Hon. D. Pinkerton and P. G. Prydo, J.P.s., on the charge of shooting at W. M'Meikan ypith intent to do him grievous bodily harm. Sab-inspector Kiely said that accused was only arrested late last night, and as some of the witnesses lived at a distance they could not be subpoenaed in time to attend this morning’s sitting. He would ask for a short remand, say to Friday next, when he would be prepared to go on with the case. Mr A. C. Hanlon, counsel for accused, offered no objection to this course, and applied for bail, of a non-prohibitive order. Tho Bench fixed the further heaxinv of the case until the 7th! insh, and allowed bail of two sureties of £25, or one of £SO. :
