FIGHT-OAR TOURNAMENT,
* TUo annual contest for the challenge cun presented bv Messrs C. P. M. Butterworfh and John White took place last evening, when the first two heats were rowed. In the first heat the D.A.B.C. mot the N. Although rather rough at the start of the race, the water calmed considerably. Both boats got away to an even staid, from which • the D.A.B.C. were the first to forge ahead. This crew settled down to a steady swing, and, though repeatedly challenged,' managed to keep a slight lead. The North End. though rowing gamely, appeared to suffer when striking the jobhle at the approach to the wharves. The excitement at this stage of the race was great, and after a well-contested race the D.A.B.C. were declared winners by about a length. The competing crews were as follow: D.A.B.C. : J. A. Stables (how), A. Watson, D. Fraser. H. Shaw, W. Olsen, S. Abrim, J. Mitchell, J. Williams (stroke), R. Watson (cox). N.E.B.C. : J. W. Dick (bowl, M. Brown, J. Hutcheson. M. Higgins, Joe Breen, A. Allan, J. Logan, E. Davies (stroke), J. Elston (cox). The competitors in the second heat, the Otago and Queen’s Drive, took their places in the boats shortly before eight o’clock The water at this time was perfectly calm, and the starter had no difficulty in despatching the crews together. The O.R.C. seemed the first to gain some advantage, but the Drive, getting on their well-known catch, soon assumed a lead, and by a series of spurts staved off the repeated efforts cf the Otago to get on terms. On entering th 3 basin the Drive had a slight lead, both crews rowing in splendid form, and the crowd on the wharf were treated to a fine exhibition of eight-oar rowing, and also to a ding-dong finish, of which the Drive got the advantage by a few feet. The following competed,- - Queen’s Drive: A. Johnstone (bow), B. Anderson, S. Hawes, J. M’Douald, T. White, W. Porter, D. M’Donald, C. Brait-h----waite, (stroke), D. Thompson (cox). O. : W. Aimers (bow), W. Harvey, P J. Priest, J. Matthewson, L. Kirkcaldy, C. R. Gooch. L. Hay, H. Brasch (stroke), E. Watson (cox).
Mr W. Mill* acted as starter, and Mr L R. Wilson as judge. The semi-final takes place at 6.30 to-mor-row,''evening, when the P.C.R.C. meet tks D.A.B.C. The final race will take place at the Ravensboumi regatta on Saturday next.
THE CANTERBURY CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.
[Special to the Stab.]
CHRISTCHURCH, February 3
In spite of the fact that the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting will be held next week, Riccarton is very quiet just now. The local horses that competed at the Wellington summer meeting have all returned, however, and no doubt matters will grow a little more animated as the present week advances. At the same time, our summer meeting is never a very lively one. It is generally confined almost entirely to locally-trained horses, and very often the best of these are held in reserve for more important events decided dnring the autumn. Under these circumstances, the acceptances for the Midsummer Handicap must ne regarded as satisfactory. Seven horses remain in, and, bar accidents, all are likely to go to the post. Nothing at Riccarton is doing better work than Dundas. His visit to the West Coast during the New Year holidays wrought wonders in his condition. He is such a rogue, however, that although he will be ridden by L. H. Hewitt, and possibly coaxed into behaving himself, few people will care to trust him. Cannie Chiel is also doing good work, but Cameo may be troubled by the hard ground. Calibre, although looking well, is suffering from his feet, and Djin Djin can scarcely be got ready by next week. If by chance the last-named should reach the post dressed in his best lie ought to win. Neither Fulmeu nor Motor has arrived at Riccarton yet. Both are said to be certain starters, and provided the former can be persuaded to put bis best foot forward he is bound to be dangerous. In the Middle Park Plate half a dozen belong to Air Stead, and we need not troubl© to look outside tlic Yaid hurst lot for the winner. Probably it will come from among the three-year-olds—Royal Artillery, Cruciform, and Mcnschikoff. It has always been a mystery to many sporting folic why Anna never received iin opportunity of distinguishing himself at the stud. The son of The Painter was perhaps the best allround racehorse that New Zealand has produced. He won important races on the flat, over hurdles, and between and even placed a Grand National Steeplechase to his credit, and yet when placed at the service of breeders he was so neglected that his owner in disgust packed him off to his sta-tion.
