TO THE ID iron. Sir.—l notice that Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., criticises through your columns my recent remarks —which with characteristic politeness he terms '* utter nonsense ” —on the substai.l ial increases which year after year are made in the big salaries of the Civil Service Mr Mackenzie says I was indignant because certain salaries were increased by £ls or £25 a year, but that I approved of the increase of one salary from £5,000 to £7.000 The salary referred to is that of His Excellency the Governor. As a fact, there has been no increas"-, but a sum of £2.00*) was specially voted to reimburse Lord Ranfurly for expenses connected with tlie visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. The bill was one which the colony was in honor bound to foot, and consequently I supported it.
