AUCKLAND, January 25. The North Island Main Trunk Railway League have decided to comply with the requert of the Farmers' Union by visiting the northern districts -ith the object of securing the rapid extension of the railway from Wellington to Hokianga.
WELLINGTON, January 23,
The anniversary holiday, which was to be observed to-day in place of yesterday, is spoilt by a heavy northerly gale with rain, which sprang up last night. Most of the picnic and excursion fixtures arranged had to be abandoned, and the regatta of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club was postponed till Saturday. HOKITIKA. January 23.
Since the weather broke last week there has been some heavy rain. Last night rain fell steadily for some hours, resulting in a flood. To-day the low-lying portion of the town is under Mater. A heavy gale also prevailed through the night, and a mountainous sea is rolling home. It is doubtful if Sir J. G. Ward will g-.t through to the Coast to-morrow, as proposed, owing to the weather. r lhe local bodies are arranging a programme to occupy four davs for Westland. embracing visits to Hokitika, the neighboring lakes, nil Ross and Kumara.
