EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE

Messrs P. G. Pryde and J. Neil* secretaries of the' Otago and Southland Education Boards' Respectively- leave by to-mor-row morning's express 'train for the North for the purpose of attending the Conference of. Secretaries of Education Boards, which is to be held in Wellington next Tuesday, at the instance of the Education Department. ' Tbe circular on the • subject issued to boards by the department states that, as the pasting of the Public School Teachers' Salaries Act. will alter the basis of the principal payments to education boards, it is desirable that the work entailed by ,the Act upon the"officers of the various boards and of the department should, with due regard to efficiency, be kept within as narrow limits as possible. There are other matters in which it is advisable that the routine work, should, be.made as simple as it can be made. Such matters are the recognition of instructors, and the sending in of claims under the Manual and Technical Instruction Act, 1900, district high school grants, tbe checking of railway tickets for drill and technical classes, etc. It is not proposed that questions, of policy shall be discussed, but the great saving of work to the boards and the department that will, it is hoped, be the result affords sufficient reason, for holding the Conference.
