Captain Bonnor, of the scow Whakapai, •ivho was drowned by the capsizing of that vessel between East Island and the mainland. was formerly second mate of an American barque, and subsequently joined the Union Steam Ship, being connected with the Kia Ora, Rotorua, Rotomahana, and other vessels of the red-funnel fleet. On leaving the company's employ he embarked in a trawling enterprise, and subsequently took charge of the schooner Oban, a position he relinquished in favor of his father, in order to take command of the Whakapai. Tire Haven arrived, at Napier at eleven this morning, and sails at 4 p.m. for Auckland.

The. Janet Nicoll leaves Greymonth at eleven to-night for the Bluff and Dunedin. She is due here late on Friday night next or early Saturday morning. The Talnne, from Dunedin, the Bluff, and Hobart, arrived at Melbourne at 4 a.m. on Sunday, and returns by the same route at 4 p.m. to-morrow. The -Wakanui sailed this afternoon for London via Lyttelton and Wellington. She liar- iuken from the Port 9,730 carcasses c.f frozen mutton, 2.459 crates of frozen rabbi's. a quantity of boxes of butter, hales of wool, and casks of tallow. ! A white-painted brigantine was reported passing the Nuggets this morning standing north. The Ujina discharged about 600 tons of i.ivgo at the cross wharf, and sailed this afternoon for the Bluff, whore she puts out about 450 tons. Newcastle and Sydney and Brisbane are her next ports, to load i na.l and for Bombay. THE WHAKAPAI WRECK. GISBORNE, October 1.- -.lames Bertie, the survivor of the Whakapai wreck, reached Port. Awanui this morning. Re was in a greatly exhausted state when pulled out of the water. The conk (Harry Miller) was the last to ho washed off the vessel, and. clinging t" a- spar, he drifted :ci within twenty yards of the beach. A native swam out to save him. hut, when dose fo him he disappeared. Bertie states that before the capsize occurred the vessel became so full of water that she was quite unmanageable. Sho drifted in the passage bstween East Island ami the mainland, and Captain Bonnor, fearing that she would go on the rocks, dropped anchor, when, as she s'vnng round, a heavy sea caught her and turned her over. Bertie was the first to be washed off. and seized a piece of wood, which assisted him ashore. AUSTRALIAN WEATHER REPORT. ALBANY, September 30.—Wind. N.E. : bar., 30.3; line.
