CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

NAPIER, September 24. In the Supreme Court George Woodward, who pleaded guilty to the theft of the Weber Road Board funds, was admitted to two years' probation and ordered to pay £lO costs. Charles Maxwell, convicted of causing actual bodily harm by sltooting T. Heritt, at Wairoa, was released on his own recognisance of £IOO, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. The Judge remarked that he did not believe the shooting was intentional. Tokomauri, convicted of practising pretended witchcraft, was sentenced to one year. Judge Edwards said that such cases must be put down with an iron hand, with a view to the suppression of tohnngaism. It was only by imposing heavy penalties that the influence of these so-called tohungas amongst natives wonlil be broken.
