FOOTBALL.
Sydney advices respecting the death bf W. A. Shortland, of the New South Wales team which recently toured this colony, report that, excepting that he complained of being wearied at tho large amount of travelling during the ■ tour, he Was apparently in good health till taken suddenly ill on Monday last. He succumbed yesterday to influenza and kidney trouble. The Otago Rugby Union 'yesterday afternoon sent the following- message to the hon. secretary of the New South Wales Union:—" Otago condoles with New South Wales ( over Shortland's death."
