THE CHRISTCHURCH ELECTION.
The election for the vacant ClwietchnwJi seat passed off very quietly. The polling was small, only 9,707 votes being cast out ' of 17,355 on the roll. -. It was generallyanticipated that the contest between Messrs G. J. Smith and Charles Taylor would oe close, and that Mr Tumbril's support of denominational grants would mean loss of ground to him. The totals are:— G. J. Smith ... ... 3,912 Charles Taylor 3,418 , A. H. Turnbril ... „. ... 2,377 There was greater interest in the evening, when crowds assembled in the vicinity of the newspaper offices. The three candidates returned thanks to th»ir supporters from the 'Lyttelton Times' building. , [Special to thb Stab.] Undismayed by their representative's d>»feat yesterday; Mr Taylor's Committee met " last evening and decided to form a' political organisation on similar lines to the Dimedin Workers* Political Committee*.
