MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES
At the 12th of July celebration of'the L.O.L. William Johnston St. Peter's Hall, South Dunedin, was tastefully decorated. The mayor (Mr A. Todd) presided. The hall was crowded. A varied programme was gone through, the following contributing :—Songs, Misses Sangster and Cooper, Messrs Stnbbß, Smith, Cooper, Elston, Graham, Brown. Ross; recitations by Messrs Mills and Frazer: pianoforte solo by Mr Stokes, duet bv Mr and Miss Cooper, violin solo by Mr Scott, and flute solo by Mr Amos. A dance followed, Messrs Smith, Logie, and Mill acting as M.C.s. Messrs Stokes and Amos supplied the music. The fortnightly meeting of Court Enterprise, A.0.F., was held in the European Hotel on Tuesday. C.R. Bro. Gibson occupied tha. chair.. There was a pood attendance. One candidate was initiated. Bro. John Melville, P.D.C.R., on behalf of the members of the court, presented Bro. John Gillies, treasurer, on the occasion of nis marriage, with an e.p. afternoon tea service and a case of afternoon teaspoons, Bro. Gillies suitably responded. At Jie invitation of Bro. Ingram the court decided to pay an official visit to Court Pride of Dunedin and help to welcome Bro. J. M. Nicholson (captain of the Fourth New Zealand Contingent). The Ivanhoe Lodge, U.A.0.D., held their fortuightly meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall, Albany street, on Monday evening, ArchDruid Ero. H. Isaacs presiding. There was a good attendance. Two candidates' were initiated. The. Arch-Druid then called upon P.D.P. Bro. Haymes to present P.D.P. Bro. Blissard with a framed P.D.P. diploma. Bro. Blissard .suitably responded. The following committee will arrango for the annual social: —Bros. Isaacs, Kellan, Hope, Hunter, Moss, Driver, Peters, Wynn, and Justice. P.M.S. Bro. Knight, of the Linwood and Ivy Lodges (Christuhurch), responded ,to the second toast. Songs were contributed by Bros. Davis, Hill, and Hunter. Receipts, £32 5s 6d. * An American lady, Miss Morjn Stuart, of the Cast'.o Square Opera Company, has been blessed bv Nature with 200 miies of golden hair. Wavy and abundant, the tresses fall a.must to the hem of her gown. The number of hairs to the square inch'of the head have been counted, and the hair is sft in li'ngth, so it is estimated that if the silken strnnd- were laid end to end 200 miles would be measured. It is a wonderful head oi hair, and it is worthy of note that the fairowr.er-thesnot believe in curling irons. Madnrne De boges, formerly Harriet La'-casti'iY of New York, has given birth in Pars to triplets. This ig the third time that the same thing has happened to her; fSho was married exactly three years and thr e months ago, and has nine children a J boys, and healthy. Teacher: "I just gave you the proverb ; The burned child dreads fire.' Now, can any of you tell me a similar proverb?" Pupil: "I can, teacher. 'The'waihed child dreads the water. 5 "
