PERSONAL.
A Gisborne message states that Mr Pastey, the Collector of Customs there, retires at the end of the present month. A Sydney message announces the death of Mr Fred. Hiscocks, a well-known theatrical proprietor. Mr T. P. Brass, of Invercargill, has been appointed curator to the Southland Acclimatisation Society. Mr J. Brodie, of Messrs Briscoe, Macneil, and Co.'s, Wellington, and a brother of Mr T. Brodie, of football fame, has been hurriedly called to iiunedin owing to the illness of his mother. There is an improvement in the condition of Mrs Brodie, and Mr Brodie goes back to Weilinjrton to-morrow.
Miss Rochester, well known to colonial playgoers as .a member of 'The Sign of the Cross' and other companies, and latterly connected with the Stanton Comic Opera combination, has had to enter the Dunedin Hospital for the purpose of undergoing a critical operation. A Wellington message states : ..Mr Rowe, of the railway accountants' branch, has been appointed to the vacant chief clerkship in the Railway Stores Department. Trooper G. R. Miller, mentioned in yesterday's cablegrams as having received a lieutenancy in the Royal Artillery, was a member of the Fourth Contingent, and :s a son of Sir Henry MiLer (Speaker of the Legislative Council).
