Besides'the usual commercial, market, and mining intelligence, it will contain accounts of the reception of the returned troopers at Dunedin and in the country. The San Francisco mail wheh left Auckland bf, the Sierra on June 15 arrived in London four days late. The replanting with grass of the Octagon enclosure has been commenced, and new plants are bein? placed in the flower beds. Messrs A. • Thomson and W. Goldie, J.P.s, presided at the Port Chalmers Police Court this forenoon, when Joshua Salters, for drunkenness, was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. There was a good house at the Alhambra last evening, and for to-morrow am entire change of programme and scenery are promised. To-night the present bil will be again presented. * ; The Counties Conference to-day decided on the retention of toll gates, but exempted funeral processions from ■ the payment cf tolls. It was agreed that counties should have the same powers as boroughs for the prevention of nuisances. A fire occurred about half an hour after noon to-day in the premises occupied by Mr M. Lyons, of Arthur street. The fire brigade promptly turned out, and soon had it under control, and managed to keep it confined to a back room, which was considerably charred by the flames. No other damage has apparently been done. -The fire is attributed to a defective chimney. We hear of dissatisfaction amongst school committees at the new method of voting for the Education Board. The Forbury Committee, meeting last night to consider the claims of candidates, were strongly of opinion that the voting should be bv ballot instead of using signed papers, and we understand that at the next ordinary meeting this opinion will take the shape of a formal protest.
The Brace Herald' states that Mr C. iung, the conductor of the Milton Band has been advised from the Bluff by the secretary of the Band Contest Committee that the contest will be held on October 50 and 31. In addition to the quickstep, grand selection, and solo competitions quartejs hare been included in the pro?ramm», while the prize money has been increased by £2O. *The contest pieces are expected to arrive about the Ist of August. The apparatus for the Forbury School Gymnasium being now all supplied, with the exception of the horizontal bar, whi-h has been ordered and is to be shortly supplied, a meeting was held last night with ™ view of forming gymnastic .classes. Mr T. Smith, chairman of committee, presided, and explained the position of affairs. The classes would be open to the young men and women of the distriot, and all were eligible upon the conditions of good behaviour, care in using the appliances, and. the payment of a small fee, and he hoped that the Committee's object—namely, to provide physical instruction and at the same time give the young people healthy amuseinentr-would be attained. If so, the club to be formed, in the management of which the members would take part in conjunction with the Committee, would be a blessinc to the district. Mr Stewart added that it was proposed to secure the services of Mr J. Smith as instructor, and that the subscription per quarter would be: For boys, senior 5s and junior 2s 6d; for girls 6s and 3s. The details as to the nights <f meeting and so forth would have to i>e arranged with Mr Smith. A number .»f names were handed in by those who proposed, to become members, and the next meeting was fixed for next week, when 'n all probability a strong club will be formed. The gymnasium is very completely tquipped, and men who have the public welfare at heart are taking an interest in the scheme. The annual meeting of the Dnnedin Bowling Club will, bo held to-morrow evening. • The first O.R.F.U. trial match will take place to-morrow afternoon at the Oarisbrobk Ground. T.
