CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following Ls z surmary of the reports to be presented at to-morrow night's meeting of the City Cr-uncil :—.

The Finance Committee report basing granted tbe following applications for rebate* ot half the general, special, and water rates on premises or vacant for over six months:—Mr Percy Laing. FiLlenl srreet and Great King street; Mr C. R. Chapman, York place; Mr Maurice Joel, walker street; Mr Sydney Wynne, Great K ing street. Accounts amounting to £2,602 14s 2d have been passed for payment. The Reserves Committee "recommend: That Mr Daniel Wm. Woods, of Stuart street, Dunedin, building contractor, be appointed valuer on behalf of the City Corporate m pursuant to terms of each of the undermentioned leases:—Allotment 45, subdivision of sections 3 and 4, block 6, Town district; lessee, Mr Robert Winkfield. Subdivision of sections 1 and 2, block 4, Upper Kaikorai District: Allotment B—Lessee, Mr Donald M'Dor.ald; allotment 10— lessee, Mr Alex. Miller. Subdivision of sections 8. 9, 10, and part 53, Wakari District: Allotment 17—Lessee, Wm. Hep-burn's-executors; allotment 22—lessee, Wm. Hepburn's executors. That Mr John Reid, of Liverpool street, estate agent, Dunedin, be appointed valuer on behalf of the City Corporation pursuant to terms of each of the undermentioned leases :—Subdivision of sections 1, 2, 3, aud 7, block 2, East Taieri District; Allotment 2—Lessee, Mr Sinclair Korner; allotment 16—lessee, Mr Michael Hughes. Parte of section 4, block 19, Waihola district—Lessees, Mr Frank Barra, Mr Robert Chapman. Sections 3, 4, 5, block 20, Waikola District—Lessee, iir 'Wm. Smith. Block 1, North Molyneux District: Section I—Lessee, Mr William Marshall; sections 2, 5, 4—lessee, Mr William Marshall- Section 4, block 3, East Taieri District—Lessee, Mr Robert Todd.. The Committee cannot sec their way to make any recommendation in the way of appointing a permanent valuator for the City Corporation leaseholds. The city surveyor has been • instructed to act with the chairman as to request from the Dunedin and Kaikorai Tram Company, Limited, for permission to cut a small portion of the bush at the corner of the Queen's Drive and tram track, so that their employes may see any person or vehicle approaching; and to act- with referenca to application from the Northeast Valley Borough Council to have the open drains on both sides of the road on the Belt Reserve cleared of docks and other vegetable growth. The Gas Committee report having accepted the tender from Messrs James Macfie and Co. ior the supply of East Greta coal to the -city gasworks for the twelve months ending 31st March, 1902, at the following prices:—Screened coal, 29s per ton; unscreened coal, 28s per ton; nuts or small coal, 23s lOd per ton. The- General Committee report tkat-during the past fortnight 399" cattle, 2,114 sheep, 810 lambs, 86 pigs, and 36 calves were slaughtered at the abattoir, of which four cattle were condemned as unfit for food. Mr R. Hay has been instructed to proceed with the preparation of plans and speciiica-t-ions of the sewer to bo laid from the abattoir to tho cceau, with a view to calling for tenders for the same at -an early date. Tho license- issued to Mr Morton, of Mount Cargill, North-east Valley, to sell milk within tho City has been cancelled, on the recommendation of the Government Veterinarian, owing to Ms disregard of cleanliness in the management of his cows and tho handling of the milk. Mr N. Y. A. Wales's letter with reference to tho septic tank system of sewerage is referred to the Council- The request from the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners for the City Corporation to be brought under the award of the Arbitration Court, delivered June 29, 1800, Jias been agreed to. The Committee recommend that the wages of the members of the Dunedin City Fivv Brigade be increased as follows: —Cap'ai'. Mitchell, from £2OO to £225 per annum : Senior Foreman Camngton. from £2O to £3O per :umum; Second Foreman Little, from £2O to £26 per annum ; fifteen firemen, from £l6 to £2O per annum each. That Captain Henry Mitchell be reappointed a lirj inspector for (he City of Dunedin under section 513 of tho Municipal Corporations Act. 1900. That Forcmr.n John Carrmgton be appointed a lire inspector for the City of Dunedin under section 313 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900. Leave of absence for one, week ha-s been granted to a team of seven members of the Dunedin City Fire Brigade to enable them to take part in the fire brigades' demonstration at Christchurcli on the 28!h inst., suitable substitutes being provided to fill the temporary vacancies.

The Public Works Committee recommend that a wooden block crossing, with iron plates over tho channels, be luid in Princes street south over Walker street-

The Special Tramways Committee recommend that, the Council adopt the following extensions and alterations to the line of rout* of the Dunedin City and Suburban Tramways, as marked on the plan forwarded with Messrs Noves Bros.' preliminary report, and submitted herewith :—The extensions to Tahuna Park and lo the Caledonian Ground, also the -extensions marked M to X. N to F. H to J. S to T, and C to R, also tie oxtra trade 0 to U as for as Stuart street only. That a. separate price i>e obtained from Messrs Noyes Bros, for extensions marked Kto L. The following suggestions have betm agreed to in connection with the preparation of tho plans, etc.. for the tramways :—Thai the single track in the Northeast Valley be laid in the centre of the. street, with centre poles: that a street watering c;:rt be included in the specifications ; that twentv-five copies of all drivings and spccilientions be supplied to the Council. The following letters are referred to the Council for its consideration :—Mr R. Hay's report on the permanent way and roUing stock of the Dunecin City arid-Sub-urban Tramways Company, Limited ; Messrs Smith. Chapman, and Sinclair re settlement of tramway purchase; Mr R. Hay forwarding plans of proposed weir on Taicri River.
