CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following departmental reports will bo submitted at v *'''> , vr l V 1 night’s meeting of the City Council:—

The General Committee recommend that a sewer be provided for carrying the abattoir drainage into the Ocean at or near the mouth of the Kaikorai Stream, at an estimated cost of £5,387. The present method of discharging into the Kaikorai Stream cannot longer bo continued. During the past fortnight 618 cattle, 2,257 sheep, 830 lambs, 115 pigs, and 42 calves were slaughtered at the abattoir, of which 5 cattle were condemned as unlit for food. It is recommended that the following applications for licenses to store dangerous goods lie granted :—Messrs John Murdoch and Co., Castle street, 200 gal turpentine; Mr Henry Markwald, Cumber-, land street, 1 ton carbide of calcium. A letter from Captain Mitchell, with which he submits an application from the members of' the Dunedin City Fire Brigade for an ‘in- ■ crease to their salaries, is referred to the Council for their consideration. The Water Committee recommend that a supply of water be laid to the Logan Point baths, also to Mr Palmers works at Logan Point, provided he pays £lB towards the cost of same and £ls per annum for the use of the water, the supply to be during the pleasure of the City Council so far as the baths arc concerned. 1 The Gas Committee report that the South Dunedin gas lighting contract having expired, the same has been referred to the gas engineer to instruct the city solicitors to act with regard to extending the same for a further period. The purchase of a drilling machine at a cost of £8 10s for the gasworks has been authorised." The Reserves Committee report recommending that Mr Daniel Wm. Woods, of Stuart street, Dunedin, building contractor, be appointed valuer on behalf of the City Corporation, pursuant to terms. ofeach of the under-mentioned leases; Allotment 45, subdivision of ■ sections 3 and 4, block 6, town district; lessee, Mr Robert Winkfield. Subdivision of sections 1 and 2, block 4. Upper Kaikorai district—Allotment 8, lessee Mr Donald M'Donald; allotment 10, lessee Mr Alexander Miller. Subdivision of sections 8, 9, 10, and part 53, Wakari district—Allotments 17 and 22 ; lessee, Wm. Hepburn’s executors. Subdivision of sections 1, 2.' 5, • and 7. block 2, East Taieri district—Allotment 2. lessee Mr Sinclair Korner; allotroent 16, lessee Mr Michael Hughes. That Mr Richard Cameron of Manor place, Dunedin, building contractor, lie appointed valuer on behalf of the Citv Corporation, pursuant to terms, of each of the under-mentioned leases;— Parts of section 4, block 19. Waihola district; lessees, Messrs Frank Barra and Robert Chapman. Sections 5, 4. 5, Block 20. Waihola district; lessee, Mr William' Smith. Block 1, North Molyneux district—Sections 1, 2, 5, 4, lessee Mr William. Marshall. Section 4. block 3. East Taieri district, lessee Mr Robert Todd. The city surveyor has been instructed to have an inexpensive inscription placed on the oak tree which was planted at the north-east side of the Botanical Gardens on the 10th March, 1863, to celebrate the occasion of the marriage of the then Prince of Wales, giving a history of the tree; also to make every effort to abate the nuisance caused by weasels in the en- ■ closures in the Botanical Gardens, and to purchase any necessary appliances. A letter of thanks has been sent to Mr Duncan Campbell, steward on s.s. Invercargill, for his donation of a kakapo or night parrot to the Botanical Gardens, the same having .) _beeo..taken from Preservation Inlet. _ X
