PRESENTATION TO DR CHILTON.

Over 100 ex-pupils of the Port Chalmer* District High School met yesterday evening in the Trinity Church Schoolroom and entertained Dr and Mrs Chilton at a social. Amongst the visitors were ©is Worship the Mayor, Messrs J. Mill, J. Cleghorn, J. Cook, and Rehnie. Apologies were received from Miss Sinclair, Morsra Maekie, C. Fsleoner, W. Morton, T. Hunter, M.A., A. Purdie, Dr Falconer, of Seacliff, T. Tropp, H. Downes, King, Miss H. Murray, and others. Mr D. Strachau, M.A., a former pupil of the school, was voted to the chair : while Mr A. Moir performed the duties of secretary. The room was nicely decorated, and presented quite a cosy appearance. The proceedings commenoed with a. pianoforte solo by Miss K. Maodonnell. The Misses Annie Morgan and J. Thomson sang songs, Mr J. Cashman gave a recitation, and Mr J. Cable, jun., played a cornet solo. Duriog the interval all present had an opportunity of saying a few words to their old master, and the obairman, who stated that he had both been a pnpil and teaoher in the school, felt much honored on being called upon to fill the position he did. He reviewed Dr Chilton's long and intimate connection with the school, which, under that gentleman's supervision, had arrived at perfection, both as regards numbers and the qualifications of *tie pupils. They cno.and all felt sorry when Dr Chilton determined to sever his connection with them, but he felt impelled to devote himself to still higher pursuits. For this purpose he had gone Home and studied, with the success they all knew. He could assure Dr Chilton that his career., at Home had been keenly watched by them all, and his successes had been sources of gratification to them. They were glad.to have him with them oace more, and felt , assured that success would follow him' wherever he went. On behalf of the expupila (boys and girls) he desired to offer him a small token of their esteem in the shape of a writing desk of solid oak. The inscription, on a silver plate, was as follows -.— <« Presented to Dr Chilton - by Port Chalmers Old Pupils; 1901." He hoped the doctor would long be spared to use that writing table.—(Applause.) Dr Chilton thanked them gratefully for the kindness they had at all times shown to Mrs Chilton aud himself, and after an absence of six years he was much gratified at meeting ; so many of his old pupils. He very much appreciated their handsome present, which, to him, was a most suitable and acceptable one. He thanked them one and all, and should at all times be happy to see and hear of them. Miss Annie Bauchop, M.A., m a few well-chosen words, asked Mrs Chilton to accept a ' handsomely carved tea tray, for which that lady returned thanks. His Worship the Mayor sUted that he held a number of apologies from axpupils and others who were unable to attend, and these he would hand to their secretary, who would read them. For ni - m u 6l L he felt great pleasure at being with them that evening and witnessing the esteem in which Dr Chilton was held by his old pupils. Medical science, His Worship said, had gained a prize in the advent of Dr Chilton in the ranks of its professors. Mr Straohan, M.A , suggested that "the occasion was a favorable one for the establishment of an annual reunion amongst the old? members of the Bchool. «Auld langsyne' was then sung with great enthusiasm, and the guests of the evening left amidst hearty cheers. A couple of hours was afterwards pleasantly spent in dancing.
