Thirty Fhniborough fishermen recently undertook to refloat for the sum of £I,OO > the steamer JJrever, which went ashore on the Yorkshire coist near there. Their efforts have now been crowned with success. The fishermen had labored hard at clearing awav the rock and undermining the vessel, and with hundreds of renple lining the cliffs atFUmborotigb Heid to watch t! e procei-dings three tugs got hold of the tow ropes which had been fixed. Gradually the vowel oegan to move. Cheer after cheer rose from the people on the cliffs as the ship slowly drew awav. p v?e »•• re reacQ etl Sydney recently bv the K.iu.b Miowcra of *n interesting soiling race between Newcastle and Honolulu, the competitors being four clippers-namely, the City of Adelaide, a Nydney-owned vessel of Sl3 tons; the j A ° f T V" 17 tons ! the Bangalore, of 1,699 tons ; and the John C. Potter, of 1,145 ton?. Writing f°J£ »? 0 , ,u , 1 i 1 on tbe ll)tu '«»*'•. the chief officr of the Adelaide (Mr George Marment) says: "We were the last vessel to leave the moorings at Newcastle; some of the oihers iL-tt two runs ahead of us. We beat tue fastest of them by ten days, and t.vo or toem—the Bangalore and another one-by twelve days, the other by fourteen days " Tna * ° 4 « <llde is well known in Australian waters. lor many years she carried yn-sengrrs and cargo roust the Australian cnr.Bt. and made an enviable name as one of the fastest steamboats m the intercolonial service. Some years ago her .ngi e3 were taken out, and she was converted into a four-masted barque. At first sbedidnot appear to suit as well under her new T> npeiiing power as was looke i for; but lately Her sailing qualities have justified the best expectations. She is owntd by Messrs NeUon and Robertson, of Sydney. ' THE BRIGANTINE RNTEEPRISE MISSING. The brigantine Enterprise left Wsingoaui for Karpara on May 28, and has not since been heard of. The Marino Department has instructed the i-oilectors of Customs to request vessels leaving tor porta on the West Coast to keep a look out for THE ZEALANDIA. To meet the convenience of those desirous of attending Parliament, Messrs Hudd'irt, Parker, and Co. have decided to detail the Z.:alaod:a at Lyttelton on Wednesday, 20th inst, till the arrival of the Dunedin express on that date. WARSHIPS IN KHAKI. Lord Charles Bercsford, the ' Navy League J<rornal' says, has painted his flagship the Kamillres, a dull grey color. England has hitherto been behind every great Continental navy in the rational painting of her warships. Their normal dress of black, white, and service buff makes them sup-srb targets upon which to lay guns, i ranee years a°o adopted a mudriv grev, and Germany followed suit with a drown gicy, which is most ditlicult to pick out in any but. the clearest weather. Of cnurse, our ships would all have to be repainted on the eve of war. THE LOSS OF THE WOLVERINE. Captain Lambert, of the steamer Pukaki, and lnomas M Adams, of that vessel, gave evidence bef re Mr Haselden, S.M., at Wellington yesterday as to having sighted the dl-fated ausiliary schooner Wolverine between Port Chalmers and the Bluff in November last. Captain LamBert denied a report that tlie schooner, wh.icb was afterwards found bottom up, was flying a signal of distress when the Pukaki passed her. She was, he said, flying an ordinary signal, and just whtn his vessel got close enoueh to have enabled him to read it someone on the Wolverine hauled it down, rue wind was light at the time, and ihe schooner seemed to be all right. The evidence is to be forwarded to Auckland, where an inquiry will be held into the less of the vessel, THK DIRECT BTBAMER& The Star of England sailed for London yesterday via Las Palmar.
