THE MAHANGA BAY EXPLOSION.

Last year, while removing the foundation of a gun at the forts at Mahauga Bay, Wellington, by means of guncotton, an explosion occurred, resulting in the loss of life. The evidence in the case was forwarded to the Woolwich authorities, asking for an expression of opinion as to whether the methods adopted in ramming the charges of guncotton were safe. A reply has now been received to the effect that the method adopted at Mahanga Bay was in accordance with the text book, and that no blame in any way attached to the authorities. However, to avoid, as far as possible, further accidents in .connection with explosives, the war authorities intended to issue new regulations dealing with dry and wet. guncotton.
