HYDRAULIC POWER FOR DREDGES.
TO THfc EDITOR. Sir, I see it reported in your mining columns that a trial is to lie made to drive a dredge at Waipori hy hydraulic nower. J he cost of coal has always been a big item there, but owing to the recent discovery at Broad Creek it will in future be able to be obtained for less money than has hitherto been paid for cartage. Added to this is the fact that water engines enn never be u success, as when the hydraulic blow has been struck in the cylinder the water cannot escape quickly enough to make room for the back stroke of the piston. The experiment will be watched with interest, hut I hone that companies will refrain from similar undertakings until the result of ibis one is known. —I am, etc., Emitnkkb, June 13.
