A DREDGE BURNT.

[Special to the Stab.] ALEXANDRA SOUTH, June 11. A serious lire broke out on the Ngaparn dredge early yesterday morning, resulting in the total destruction of the housing uni} all the woodwork on the dredge. The fire had a good hold before being discovered, and it had practically burnt itself out before help arrived a large boatful of coal lying alongside the dredge was also burned, and it is supposed that the fire originated by some sparks, blowing into the boat when the last man on the shift was discharging ashes. Fortunately the hull is of steel, otherwise the dredge would have become a total loss. All the framing supporting the machinery is also of steel. A good deal of damage was done to the steam connections, but the main engine and machinery are not much damaged. The dynamo and engine for supplying the electric light were destroyed. The damage is estimated at about £SOO.
