THE TRADES CONFERENCE.
At yesterday afl minim's sitting uf the Trades and Labor Conference, It was resolved (hat, providing both parties are agreed, proceedings be taken direct to the Arbitration Court; further, that when an award or industrial agreement expired it shall bo deemed to Ire in force until another award or agreement is entered into. It was resolved that the Workmen’s Wages Act should l)c amended by giving unions power to sue on behalf of members. The Government arc to bo asked to grant fid per day increase to railway hands who receive under 10s per day in the Westland district. The proposal that a central fund bo established for tho purpose of contesting breaches of awards and agreements was agreed to, and the questions will Ire submitted to the various councils for consideration. A motion that the Government be asked to introduce a Minimum Wage Bill was carried by 6 to 4. The Government are to be asked to abolish grand juries, only one jury list to prevail, and jurors to be paid 10s per day. The Conference urged that Iwforo any permit be given for Sunday work in mine*! an opportunity bo granted to the public of objecting ; further, that there should be no orc-crushing work on Sunday. It was decided that the resolution providing for tho annual conferences being held in Wellington and Christchurch alternately be rescinded, and that the next Conference be held in Dunedin. Tho Canterbury Council will bo tho Executive for the ’ensuing year. Satisfaction was expressed at the Government having given cllect to some suggestions by the Conference. It was decided to recommend that the delegates to future conferences be bona tide members of the Council they represent, and that members of Parliament he not eligible as delegates. v This concluded the business of the .Conference.
