A strange story comes from San Francisco, where, on U-cember 23, a wealthy Russian named Ivan Demisswieh committed suicide to avoid the vengeance of the Nihilists. At the inquest two of his fellowcountrymen testified that he was a wealthy landed proprietor, professing Nihilist views, and that he had been clu-sen by lot from amongst the members of a Nihilist organisation to which he belonged to go to St. Petersburg to assassinate the Czir. He had not complied with the order, and fearing the vengeanos of his fellow-conspirators had shot himself.
