A DENIAL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—As I expected, “Veritas” makes use of the much despised Boer tactics of practically shooting at a man behind his back and also condemning him unheard. I am, so far as my knowledge serves me, the only recent arrival in Dunedin from the Transvaal, and now take it upon myself to assume that I am the man to whom his misstatements are attributed. I crave, sir, sufficient of your valuable space to make reply. I should first like to ask “Veritas” question : How does he become acquainted with “ Refugee’s ” opinions when ho, (“Refugee”) has expressed none, but merely asked for the still unreveoled identity of “Veritas”? Let me now stale that I am essentially British, and am as proud of the fact an any man living, and for “Veritas” to insinuate that I have Boer tendencies in opposition to British is as idiotic as it is untrue. I have never said that statements made by others are untrue, hut I have said and still maintain that during my three years and a-half’s stay in South Africa I saw no ill-treatment of white people by the Boers. I do not doubt that t here m»y have been cases of cruelly. I know there was much coffering and distress during the exodus of Uitlanders, having witnessed it both in trains and in Cape ports. Perhaps, had I arrived here with tales of Boer cruelty which I had not seen, “Veritas” would have been better pleased. Would ho have me speak falsely about a country where I had received fair treatment ? In conclusion, lot mo say that no man will feel prouder than I when the news is received of the final triumph of British arms in South Africa. Thanking you in anticipation for publishing this, my last communication on the subject —I am, etc., Frank Stronach. February I t.
