GISBORNE’S PIONEER RAILWAY.

GISBORNE, February 15. Owing to heavy raiu the speeches at the turning of tho first sod of the GisborneKaraka line were postponed till tho public meeting in the evening. There was a large attendance at tho meeting. The chairman of the County Council presided. Addresses were delivered by the Hons. J. G. Ward and Hull-Jones. Mr Ward commented on the

great resources of the district and its

prolific soil. It would bo the duly of the Government, he said, to see that the work was pushed on. Ho suggested narrow gauge branch lines as feelers. He spoke at length on tho progressive policy of the Government, and alluded to the loyally of the colonies. Mr Hall-Jones drew attention to the increase in the export of mutton and wool from Gisborne during the last nine years. He said that tho work of ccn-tractirg the railway would be proceeded with at once, and ho assured the meeting that good progress would be made. Further surveys were now being undertaken by the Government. Addresses were delivered by Mr A. Fraser (M.H.R. for Napier), Mr Kettle (Napier Chamber of Commerce), Mr Theo. Cooper (delegate from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce), Mr Sevens (M.H.R. for Maaawatu), and the Mayor. '
