THE OTAGO-SOUTH LAND .section. The General Committee met yesterday afternoon in the Hussars’ orderly room. The attending members were Messrs T. \y Kempthorne (chairman), J. F. M. Fraser, (J. R. Smith, J. HI Fforking, James Hazlctt, 'W. A. Shields, A Todd, G. J,. Denni.ston’ G. Cripps, C. W. Rattray, F. St munch, T.’ Mackenzie, C. Speight, and Dr Gordon Maedonald. Mr Fraser reported that Nurse Hay proceeds to Wakatipu on Wednesday, and will canvass the Lakes district. The tee .of the Forbury racecourse as a camp has been granted willingly. Mr H. Shrimpton, secretary of the Forbury Park Land Company, wrote yesterday to the General Committee : “ In reply to your Comniit- . tec’s request for the free use of the Forlm'ry Park for the purposes of the proposed Otago ; and Southland Contingent, I am instructed ,;by.my directors to say that they comply with tfe;.-’3W*ir .request with very much pleasure. Rattray waited on dm Committee, in regard to. the Floral Fete. It was proposed to hold it on Wednesday, the 28th inst., atForhnry Park. It was also desired that this day should lie declared a general holiday, and special excursion trains should he run. -The proposals were unanimously approved. Lieutenant-colonel Webb wrote staling that the. Organising Committee could have whatever camp equipment they required at shoit notice.—-Received with thanks. Mr Barrie Marschel wrote offering to get up an entertainment in the Princess's Theatre in aid of the More Horses Fund.—lt was decided to thank Mr Marschel for the offer, which would be duly considered. Captain Stronacb was appointed to take charge of the camp until a commanding officer is appointed. tII'FFUS OF HORS ICS. The local banks propose to jointly present two horses. The, Dunedin Bums Club will donate one hivse. The, Dunedin Tailoresscs 1 Union have unanimously decided to present a horse, and, if possible, partly equip the proposed nursing contingent. A meeting to make the necessary arrangements will be held to-morrow. On the suggestion of the president (Mr C. F. (Irccnslade). the members of the Dunedin Amateur Boating Club met last evening and made an energetic start to collect funds to provide a horse. Owing to the short notice, the attendance was wily about twenty-live, but their enthusiasm left no c. of the success of the scheme, the sum of £lO 3s being subscribed in the room. As some of the club’s members have volunteered (heir services, the club will likely be represented by man ami horse. A strong committee was formed to canvass past and present members. ‘Misses Statham and Rigg are collecting Is subscriptions from cyclists with the view of providing a horse to teprcscnl the cyclists of Dunedin, especially those unattached to any club. The boarders and Mrs Ross, of Clifton House, High street, have guaranteed £25 for a horse for the Contingent. The animal is to be IV. bed "Clifton House." HOTFLKFFPFRS WILL ASSIST'. A meeting of hotelkeepers was held in the Provincial Hotel yesterday afternoon to consider what steps should be taken by the licensed victuallers as a body. The meeting went: to work in a very practical manner, and, alter unanimously deciding to subscribe, raised £65 in the room. Canvassers were appointed to wait on the members of (be Licensed Victuallers’ Association, to give everyone an opportunity of subscribing, and there is little doubt that “the trade" will be well to the front in this way. Several of these undertake to provide their own horses, and at least twenty-six out of the 125 come within this category. THM KQUIPMKXT Ut IMMITTFF. The Selection ami equipment Committee will ted very grateful for the loan of horses, saddles, and bridles for about a week. The object of this is to enable the men in camp to be exercised pending their own eiininment. THI'l SUBURBS' KFFORT'S. At a. meeting of the Soul!, Dunedin Borongh Conned last night mayor, at the suggestion of Cr Mathm, ~greed to call a public meeting at an early date with the view of obtaining funds for the purpose of purchasing a horse and equipment. The Anderson Bav ‘ representatives - Messrs R. Lee. V. (Vkden. and J. White - are calling a public meeting for Thnrsday m.ght to elect a committee to make a canvass of the district. Thev have alreadv reeeived £5 from Mr Ceorge Woodhead, and further sums are promised. In view of the fact that the Fourth Contingent will embark at Port Chalmers, a special inerting of the Port Chalmers Patriotic Fund Committee will be hold to-night. A meeting of West Harbor residents will be bold to-morrow evening to consider wavs and means. HFLP FROM THM COUNTRY. Milton is awake. Sports and a concert are to be held on the 14th. ( The mayor presided tit a meeting held in Core yesterday afternoon. Mr R. M'Nab, M.H.R., said at his instigation the mayor had telegraphed to Dunedin asking that places for ton men he reserved, and a reply was received that the Committee could not promise that. Mr M'Xab's idea, was that, the Mat aura Valley .should undertake to equip and provide ten men, of.which number ho was prepared to equip live men and furnish horses, provided lie bad the final selection after medical and military examination. Air M'Nab's offer was accepted with enthusiasm. It was decided that the Mayor of Alatanra., the chairman nf the Vvyndham Town Board, and other gentlemen, be a- committee to collect subscriptions to equip five men and purchase one horse.
