The vital statistics for the month ending to-day are :—Births, ICO ; deaths, 73 ; marriages, 36. For January of last year the figureß were -.—Births, 100; deaths, 65 ; marriages, 34.
The Customs duty collected at Dunedin for this month, amounting to £46,759 6s 7d, establishes a record for the local office.
Sarah" Jessie Buck, a married woman, has been arrested at Wellington, and remanded, on a charge of ar3on in connection with the destruction, on December 24 last, of the premises just vaoated by her. Thursday has again been selected for the weekly half-holiday for Chriatohurch and surrounding districts. The Conference, however, decided to recommend the Government to amend the Act, so as to give local bodies of seaside resorts power to appoint their own half-holiday, irrespective of the date selected by the larger centres.
