An illustration of how vessel propirty has increased to a large extent in the pa<t year is furnLshed by the recent sale of the British steamer She was purchased by F. Woods, of London, about two years ago, for .£14,000, and sold recently to Greek parties for .£IB,OOO an

advance of J&4.000, though she,had been in active eemco for the period between the sales. Of the fifty largest ship-owning companies in the world, the North German Lloyds, now becoming well known as the N.D.L. line, comes second on the list in order of gross tonnage, and according to ' Whittaker's Almanac* their vessels are the most up to date. Of their fleet of seventytwo steamers, one is a 22J-knot boat, two 20-knot, one 19, five 18, six 17, three 18, four 15, fourteen 14, ten 1.1, six 12, leaving only twenty bpats with a eutained sea speed of under 12 knots. This company's vessel Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse also holds the world's record for a day's run—viz., SSO knots.

By mail last week Captain Buchanan, of the barque Beechbank, from Hamburg to Santa Kosalia, sent to Sydney the following report, elated off the Falkland Islands, October £0:Rounded Staten Island on September 2 From that date westerly gal-s of hurricane force prevailed, and on October 17 had to run back, having lost most of her sails, and two boats badly injured, and a lot of other serious d?mage. One man was washed overboard, and several of the crew were laid up frotn exhaustion and injuries. On the morning of October 18 fell in with the barque Bianca, Griffith, of and from Liverpool, for Callao, in a sinking state, and with the loss of all boats, and second mate washed overboard. Manceuvred round her for some time, and eventually succeeded in launching the lifeboat and saving all hand?, landing them at the Falkland Islands,, When last seen the Bianca was sinking fast.

The well-known steamer Jane Douglas, which for many years has traded between Lyttelton, Akaroa, and other ports in: the Peninsula, has been sold to a company for trading on the West Coast. Her owners have purchased in her place, the steamer Cygnet, a boat which i* now at Sydney, and is in many ways an improvement upon the Jane Douslas. She is 17ft looser, her length being 120 ft: ovi-r a foot wider, being 17ft 3in in beam ; and Ift 3in deeper, her depth of hold being Sft 7in. Her engines are about twice as powerful, being of 43 horse-power nominal, while her speed is eleven knot*, against about eight knots of the Jane Donglas. She is of 124 tons gross and 65 tons net register, and is built of steel.

A most important point to shipping people, involving the question of a pilot's liability for damage to a vessel in his charge, was brought before the Victorian Board recently. Captain Campbell, of thesteamer Eiffel Tower, complained that whilst his vessel was being brought alongside the breakwater pier at Williamstown by a pilot she came into contact with a wharf pile and was damaged to some extent. The captain held the pilot responsible for the, damage, and also for any loss resulting from the detention of the Eiffel lower for repairs. The Marine Board had intitimated that they possessed no jurisdiction in such matters. Tho proper procedure is to bring a civil action against the pilot accused of neglect or want of sljill, damages being recoverable up to .£IOO. ARRIVAL OF THE KNIGHT TEMPLAR. Tho Knight Templar, from New York via Lyttelton and Northern ports, arrived off the Heads this forenoon and steamed into port. Shu brings 2.5C0 tons cargo for this port. The Knight Templar left New York on November l(i, and called at St. Vincent on the 28th, where 500 tons of coal were taken on board and the vojage resumed the same date. Exceptionally tine weather prevailed to the (Jape of Good Hope, and acrn,s the Southern Ocean the weather was not at any time bad, only an occasional moderate gale being fallen in with. Signalled off Wilson Promontory at 1 p.m. on the Kth inst., and met with tine weather until the 11th, when a strong gale from the nor hj and west was encountered. Passed Cape Maria Van Diemcn at 4.30 p.m. on the 13th, and was berthed at the Queen street wharf Auckland, at 130 p.m. on the Uth inst. The steamer next called at Wellington and Lyttelton.
