THE PUBLIC ACCOUNTS.
[Special to the Stab.]
WELLINGTON, January 29. The • Post,' in a leadiog article, atroDgly condemns tho action of the Premier in withholding the publication in the Government ' Gazette' of the last quarter's public accounts, as required by clause 66 of the Public Revenues Act, 1878, pointing out that in all the Australian colonies the accounts for the past quarter have been made public The 'Post' wants to know whether the Treasury or the Audit Office is to blame, but is inclined to attribute blame to the former, reating this assumption on clause 69 of the Act. In conclusion, the following pertinent queries are submitted :—l. Was the abstract of the receipts and expenditure for the quarter prepared and sent in by the Treasury by the 14th inst., as required by the Act ? 2. If the accounts have baen sent in to time, has any objection of any charaoter been raised by the Audit Office calculated to delay the prompt, publication of the figures 1
