Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,
TOWNSVILLE, January 7. The second mate and five of the crew of the steamer Queen Christina, from Shanghai to Newcastle, in ballast, arrived yesterday morning. They report that the steamer went aground on Lihou Reef, 230 miles beyond the Barrier Reef. She grounded on December 23 during a hurricane. There was every appearance of her becoming a total wreck. She had five feet of water in the forehold. Signals of distress failing to attract attention, the six men left in the gig on the'morning of New Year's Day, and reached Townsvillo in three days and a-half. Twenty-six men remain on the vessel. A steamer leaves for the scene of the wreck in the morning. On the passage from the wreck a strong wind and high sea were met with during the first two days, the men being drenched. For the last part of tho voyage they had to depend on the.oars. All arrived in a very exhausted condition'. BRISBANE, January 8. Thirty-two men are still aboard the steamer Queen Christina.
