WELLINGTON, January S. Lieutenants Crawshaw (Timaru; and Heather (Waikato) have been appointed to the Contingent, co.mpletiDg the number of subalterns required. Crawshaw has begun his duties, and Heather ia expected today. It is understood that Captain Reid, of the Wuikato, has accepted the captaincy of No. 1 Company, and ia expected here shortly. The Premier, the Hon. J. M'Kenzie, and the Hon. .T. G. Ward visited the onmp yesterday. Oa the suggestion of the Premier, a large portion of the time before embarkation will be spent in ball practice.
WELLINGTON, January 8. Dr Fenwick, medical officer attached to the Contingent, has received word that he ia to be attached to the troops throughout the campaign instead of for the voyage to Cape Town only.
Trooper Chapman is making good progress towards recovery. Lieutenant Crawshaw, Timaru, fills the vacant lieutenancy, and as Captain Reid has finally decided to accept command of No. 1 Company the only position left to fill is the command of the Hotchkiss battery. Toe ' New Zealand Times' states that the ridicg of ihe men is not up to the mark, odlv a small proportion being really good horsemen. The majority are merely able to "stick on," and will require a lot of practice to become efficient.
