OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

A meeting of this body was held yesterday, and attended by Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), D. Borrie, A. Baldey, W. Dallas, and T. Mac Gibbon.

A memorandum was received from the Education Board forwarding extracts from the New Zealand ‘ Gazette,’ appointing Messrs Maitland, Baldey, Dallas, Mac Gibbon, and Borrie School Commissioners for the ensuing term of three years.— I The communication was noted, and it was resolved that Mr Maitland be chairman for the current term. The manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Invercargill, asked whether the Commissioners intended to reoffer run 326 for lease.—lt was decided that the Commissioners would deal with this and other leases at their July meeting, with a view of offering for lease, say, six months before the expiry of the present term. The Under-Secretary for the Mines Department forwarded a notification by the Governor to the effect that application had been made to proclaim the Waikaia River a watercourse into which might be discharged tailings, waste water, and mining debris. He asked the Commissioners to serve on the Minister of Lands particulars of Compensation claims in the event of a proclamation being made.—Resolved that the Commissioners’ tenants be communicated with whose land adjoined the Waikaia River, with a view of obtaining from them their opinion as to what portion or portions occupied by them would be injuriously affected in the event of the river being proclaimed a sludge channel. Mr J. L. M'Donald reported that hydraulic sluicing was being carried on on Messrs Gall and Paterson’s leasehold.—lt was resolved that the objection be forwarded to the warden at Waikaia, and that he be informed that the Commissioners object to his dealing with any of their reserves, unless they have been previously brought under the Mining Act. Further, that he be informed that section 8, block 3, Waikaia, bad not been so opened up for mining. It was unanimously resolved that the members of the Trust express and place on record their high appreciation of the long and valuable services so ably rendered by their late colleague, Mr James Green, and that the secretary be instructed to forward Mr Green a copy of the resolution.
