MUNICIPAL.

South Dunedin.—The meeting of this .Council, held last evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr Eiddis), Crs Marlow, M'Curdy, M'Key, Osborne, Cronin, Betting, Shaddock, Scott, and Holley.—Mrs M. N. Mitchell’s request for repairs to the footpath in front of her house was referred to the Allocation Committee to report. —The Town Clerk, Caversham, wrote stating that his Council had paid the South Dunedin Council half-cost of cleaning the mud tanks on Cargill road since the agreement was entered into between the two bodies.—Six letters from residents in the borough complaining ■ of neglect on the part of the nightsoil contractor were read, also a letter from Mr Ellis maintaining that he had finished his work in April in contract time, though, owing to the Easter holidays, he had been a little behind time, were considered in committee.—The Finance Committee reported the balances to be ns follow :—Municipal acounts, debit, £1,231 15s 8d; Water supply account, debit, £222 16s 2d; sanitary account, credit, £B7 15s 4d; interest account, debit, £2,438 7s 2d. The Committee further recommended that the amount of money for the maintenance of each ward be pro rata on the rateable value, and therefore as follows:—East Ward, £127 Is lOd; South Ward, £4O 9s; North Ward, £166 9s 2d—total, £s34.—The Works Committee recommended the Council to call for tenders for the extension of the Corporation shed, and also for the borough’s cartage. The question of crossings had been considered, and theCommittee recommended that these be put over Cargill road opposite M'ConneU’s, corner of Brunswick street, and also from Ogg’s corner to Brown’s comer, both the crossings to be of asphalt, kerbed with stone. ' The Council decided not to place a crossing at Brunswick street, but to hay one down opposite St. Peter’s Church. The other recommendations of the Committee were adopted.—lt was resolved that the Works Committee report on the state of Macandrew and Main roads, and also as to the cost of metalling and placing them in good order.— Cr Scott presented a petition from a number of residents in Maria road for a lamp at the junction of the road with Carey’s avenue. It was decided to reply that if the petitioners would contribute the cost of the post and lamp the Council would supply the gas.— It was decided that the Finance Committee should take into consideration the advisability of leasing the Corporation’s ten-acre block in building allotments, and to report to next meeting of the Council on the agreement with the City Tramway Company.— Mr H. Conn was appointed ranger for the term of one month.

North-east Valley. —Two special meetings of .this Council were held last night, and attended by the Mayor (Mr Campbell), Crs Scoones, Bailey, Longworth, Bolting, Thomson, Rishworth, Green, and Anderson. The first meeting was to deal with claims to be placed upon the burgess roll. Only one application was forwarded, and as this had not been lodged within the prescribed time it was not granted.—At the second meeting a notice of .motion by Cr Green to rescind a resolution concerning thee purchase of the Public Hall for municipal purposes, passed at last Council meeting, was discussed, the result being that the Finance Committee be authorised to instruct Mr Roach to call for tenders for the erection of new buildings in brick. ... * Port Chalmers. —The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held yesterday evening ; present —Crs J. Watson, jun., J. Cameron, W. M. Innes, J. Weir, C. Invcrarity, G. Edgar, W. Murray, J. Watson, sen., W. Pedlow S. Wilson, j. Tail, and D. Leach. —Messrs Torrance and Simpson (Dunedin) wrote acknowledging receipt of Council’s letter requesting them to use every precaution while repairing the Presbyterian Church spire against injury to the clock. In reply, Messrs Torrance and Simpson stated that they had succeeded in finishing the work without having done any damage, and as the Council took the liberty of using their scaffolding to execute some repairs to the dials of the clock they should feel glad to acknowledge receipt of the Council’s cheque for £3 3s towards the expenses of erecting the scaffold. It was resolved that the letters be returned, and to reply that the account should be forwarded to the contractor who painted the clock. —Messrs Morgan, Cable, and Co. wrote enclosing claim for £7 for damages done to their property through reckless blasting on the Town Belt. At the same time they mentioned that some of their workmen narrowly escaped with their lives. They trusted the Council would take steps to see that more care was taken in the future, or the claims would be somewhat more serious. The letter was referred to the lessee of the quarries.—Mr A. Thomson intimated that the cottage formerly occupied by Mr Hudson was under his care. Mr Walker informed him that prior to letting it it was necessary to ask the approval of the Council. He proposed letting it to a respectable tenant, Mr Hector M'Kenzie, and asked the Council’s approval. The request was granted until the expiration of Mr Walker’s lease of the section.—The Works Committee reported that since the 28th April the staff have been occupied as follows : —Finished the path at Observation Point to the hulk at Mr Alexander Sutherland’s; also cleaned up the whole length of footpath and water-table from the Albion Company’s sheds to bond •, also cleaned out channels in Scotia street and Constitution street, and put in a 6in drain pipe across Wickliffo terrace from foot of Currie street, in accordance with resolution of Council and instructions from chairman of Works Committee to prevent the storm water flowing on to railway crossing. The street cleaning had received due attention, and the lamp-post in front of new buildings had been taken down and re-erected at the crown of the hill in George street. The inspector would, if possible, have the other lamp erected at section 122, near Mr Holden’s,, in a few days ; also the extension of the walling at Mussel Bay.—The Lighting Committee recommended—(l) That the gas lamp near Foresters’ Hall be taken down and re-erected in Magnetic street, near the crossing- (2) That a lamp be erected corner of Bums street and Bellevue place. (3) That a lamp be erected top of Constitution street, near the quarry. The report was referred to the Finance Committee.—The Water Committee reported that the fencing round the reservoir was in a very rotten condition, and would require to be renewed. The Committee sent in to the Council the caretaker’s report on same for the information of the Council.—lt was resolved that the clerk write to the Charitable Aid Board calling their attention to the fact that there was no reduction in the amount paid by the Council since the old age pensions came in force, and that there was only one person receiving aid within the borough.—lt was resolved that a lamp be erected at Ai'ora terrace.— A special meeting'was afterwards held to hear claims and objections to the burgess list and to sign the same.—lt was resolved that the mayor, with Crs Weir and Tait, sign the burgess roll and initial any alterations on the roll for the several wards, ns also the general roll from A to Z.
