THE STAR OF NEW ZEALAND'S COLLISION,

[By our London Correspondent.]

Among the many sad accidents on land and sea which marred the Eastertide gaiety of the Old Country was the collision, a few miles off Beachy Head, between the Tyser steamer Star of New Zealand and the German steamer Pontos, late on Good Friday evening. The Pontos, with a full, freight and cattle from the Argentine for Deptford, was blindly feeling her way up Channel through a dense fog, when the look-out saw the Star of New Zealand emerge from the darkness a few yards off,the port bow. The captain of the Pontos ordered " full steam ahead," and whistled to the Star to port helm, hoping thereby 1 to avert the coming impact. But the signals were made seconds too late, and the sharp stern of the lyser boat caught the Pontos full amidships cutting her down to the water's edge and making a gap 20ft wide just under the bridge. As the Star of New Zealand backed away from her victim the stricken vessel began to career over, and within five minutes of being struck.the Pontos was "all sunk beneath the waves." In that brief period however, her crew managed to launch three boats and, thanks to the perfect discipline on board every soul was saved. One boaicontaining a dozen people, including the chief officer, the second abd fourth engineers, two passengers, four of the crew and a cattleman, was at once picked up by the fyser steamer. Twelve more were picked up Ml St 1 amer * S - no . wdr ? p ' oi Aberdeen and the third boat, containing twenty souls, were rescued in the wee sma'hours of Saturday by the Hastings fishing lugger Ellen.
