SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

THe monthly meeting of the Arthur street School Committee was held last night, Mr ] Bart presiding. The head-master reported that the average attendance for the lost four weeks had been:—Boys 873, girls 262; total, 536. The number at present on the roll was: Boys 316, girls 315; total, 631. The average attendance far the quarter ended March 31 was: Boys 291, girls 282; total, 673. The attendance had been very considerably affected by the prevalence of measles, and on Friday last over 170 children were absent. Miss L. Thompson began her duties as fifth assistant on Wednesday, the 6th inst., and Miss G. Keam, who had been acting as relieving teacher, left on the same date. The head-master was authorised to use his discrimination in regard to refusing admission to pupils in the fourth and fifth standards, the rooms occupied by those standards being already overcrowded. Mr Hosking was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the High street School Committee, held last evening. The headmaster reported that the numbers on the roll were: Boys 332, girls 310; total, 642. The average daily attendance was: Boys 309, girls 289 j total, 598. It was reported that £5 4s had been deposited in the Penny Savings Bank, and £6 9s withdrawn. It was decided to donate £2 towards the Mornington Cricket Ground fund.

The George street Committee met last evening, Mr R. C. Moore presiding. The head-master reported that the number on the roll was 778. and the average daily attendance 643. The chairman reported that the supplementary sale of work by the Ladies' Guild had netted £8 lis. The clerk was instructed to convey the thanks of the Committee to the members of the Guild. The chairman reported that the contractor had got fairly to work with the erection of the gymnasium. The secretary submitted the annual report and balance-sheet, which were approved. Mr A. Black said that as that was the last meeting of the Committee he would like a minute recorded in reference to the manner in which the secretarial duties were performed, and accordingly moved: " That the Committee bear testimony to the zeal and assiduity displayed by Mr M. Fraer as secretary during the year, and record their thanks for his kind and courteous attention in connection with his onerous duties." The motion was seconded by Mr Farra and carried unanimously. The Forbury School Committee met last night, Mr Smith in the chair. The headmaster reported that the average attendance last month was 411, the average attendance for the quarter being 431. Sickness accounted for the low average. It was decided to allow Miss Hopkins to form a music class on condition that she allowed the free use of the piano during school houra The net amount received from the recent concert in aid of the gymnasium fund was reported to be £6 10s. The chairman and Mr Johnson were appointed to draw up the annual report.
