A daring attempt was made to rob the Zeehan Post Office the other day. At about daylight on Sunday, the 26th ult, a manqamed M'Kercher heard an explosion and hammering, and going outside his house ho saw a cart, which he recognised as a hand cart for carrying mails, standing in a quarry. He immediately roused the police, . who discovered that the iron safe from the money order office had been taken to the quarry, but the robbers had been unsuccessful in opening it, though they discharged dynamite m the keyhole, and hid battered the safe about with axes and hammers. The safe contained £4OO in cash and a quantity of scrip and other valuable documents. There were three safes in the building, bub this was the only one containing money. Entrance had been secured through the back window, and a quantity of chaff had been strewn about to deaden the noise. The safe had been carried on the mail cart through the back yard down a thickly-populated street to. the quarry. The postmaster’s residence adjoins the office, and the police camp is the next place. Several people heard the cart rumbling, and the explosion, but suspected'nothing. Is is believed that the Gormanston bank burglary is the work of the same gang. Boston papers announce that an Eastport (Maine) man is about to buy the plant of the •Electrolytic Marine Salts Company at North Lufaec, Maine, for use as a sardine factory. This is the outfit put in by the people who were going to clear l,ooodol per hour by “ accumulating ” gold from sea water. The company want 40,000d0l for the property, which cost a great deal more originally. The Eastport man thinks that the property would be more suitable for a sardine plant, as thousands of herrings could be kept alive in the accumulatprs,.
