The Evening Star SATURDAY, APRIL 8, 1899.

Out of nine senior scholarships offered by the University of New#ealand, tbe examiners i have only awarded five. There were plenty !of competitors, but the work of most ,of these fell below the required standard. The Jubilee Singers arrive by the express from Timaru to-night, and open at the Princess's on Monday. The company have been practically reorganised by Mr M'Adoo since their former visit six years ago. Both the evening performance yesterday and the matinee to-day at the Alhambra Theatre in connection with Fuller's waxworks were well attended. The negro sketch ' Thumbs Up' will be presented tonight. At tbe recent meeting of tho Port Chalmers Borough Council it was resolved that letters of condolence, on the death of their husbands, be sent to the widows of Dr John Cunningbamo and the Hon. W. H. Rey* nolds. The Mayor mentioned that he had just returned from paying the last tribute of respect to the Hon. W. H. Reynolds, who had faithfully represented the district in the i General Assembly for three years. At the ! meetings of the Port Chalmers Marine Lodge, No. 942, E.C., and Court Robin Hood, No. 3.991, A.OF., resolutions were also passed that letters of condolence be forwarded to Mrs Cunninghame. The records of the metropolitan hospitals show that on rare occasions persons have had the nnplcasent experience of swallowing false teeth, these accidents being tie result of somo sudden shock, but at Melbourne the other day a young njan was received into the main hospital who related that at his house in Footscray, in the early hours of the morning, he had been awakened by au irritation in the throat and a sense of suffocation. He was seized with a violent fit of coughing, and when this was over he found to bis horror that a vulcanite plate containing four false teeth bad slipped from hiß upper jaw down his throat. No serious results followed from his misadventure. .

At the sitting pf the Police Court this morning, Mr W. Hutchison, one of the presiding justices, made reference to the change of the hour at which the Court sits.— namely, at ten o'clock, instead of eleven, as formerly. While, he said, the stipendiary magistrates had the right to fix the sittings of their Court at any hour they pleased, he did not think they ought to interfere with the hour that obtained for the unpaid magistracy; at all events without giving them an opportunity of saying whether it would suit them or not, and he verily believed that ten o'clock was inconvenient to a great many.

It is understood (hat an a part of the transfer of police officers comequent on the oreatton of tab-inspectors, Sergeant O'Neill will be given charge of the InveroarglH district.

A social under the auspices of the Albion Cricket Club was held in St. Paul'* schoolroom last evening, and proved very suooenHful, about forty couples being present; During the. evening songs and reoitations added not a little to the suooess of the social. The musio by Messrs Himmel and Beath and the oateriug by Mr Lean were all that could be desired.

MrE H. Carew, SM., was occupied the whole of this forenoon, at tho Port Chalmers Magistrate's Court," hearing a charge preferred Catherine and Johanna Wilson (mother and daughter) of wilfully breaking a number of windows in the house of Charles Jacobson on the 25tb, 260b, 27th, and 28th ult. Mr Platts appeared for the complainant, and Mr Hanlon for the defendants. Evidence wa3 given by the oomplainant, Matilda and Elizabeth Jacobson, Emma Davis (who swore they were watching at a window and saw the defendant Johanna Wilson throw a stone which came through the skylight and broke the glass, and also that four Btones were thrown on different occasions from the back part of their premises), Anthony Bowling, and Charles Wingate. Mr Hanlon, for the defence, called Johanna and Catherine Wilson, who both denied having thrown any stones, the younger defendant swearing she was at the Catholio Church at the time that the windowbreaking was stated to have taken place. His Worship said that great annoyance had evidently been caused through this case. It was patent that Mrs Jacobson did not clearly see who broke the window, while Mr Bowling saw nothing. On the other hand, the defendants swore positively that they knew nothing about it. The case would therefore be dismissed without costs.

Mary Banwell, a married woman, who was convicted and discharged at the Police Court this morning on a oharge of shoplifting, it being her first offence, was taken into custody again this afternoon by Detectives M'Grath and Cooney on a scries of oharges of theft of articles of various descriptions, including bedclothisg, drapery material (prints and Buitings), boots, and two go-earts. The robberies, apparently, extend over a period of several mouths, and many of the things, such as ladies' underclothing, sheets, etc., are supposed to have been stolen from clothes lines. Many of the articles, which are quite new, and evidently have been taken from shops in the City, have not yet been identified, and the deteotives want owners for a quantity of print and ladies' and gents' suitings, rolled up in the ordinary shop fashion, and a silver teapot and butter dish, quite new, with private prioe marks attached. Tbe deteotive office bore the appearance of a drapery and millinery establishment this afternoon when the various materials were being assorted for identification.

A meeting of tho Committee of the Reserves Conservation Society was held yesterday afternoon (Mr J. R. Fisher in the chair), when the report of the sub-oommittee appointed to make arrangements for collecting subscriptions for the improvement of the Anderson Bay road was approved. The destruction of some birob trees on the Town Belt was brought under the notice of the meeting, as was a complaint by a resident near the Belt that some of the treeß planted on the Belt would ultimately entirely obstruct his view; and it was resolved that the secretary write to the City Council pointing out lh.it it was quite recognised by the committee of the society that a good deal of thinning out would ultimately have to be done, and that, so far as practicable, an endeavor should be made to avoid entirely intercepting the outlook of any residents in the neighborhood, but that all such thinning or outting down should only be done with the sanction of the Counoil, and that tho society would like to be consulted before suoh sanction was given.
