THE GOVERNOR’S NORTHERN TOUR.

RUSSELL, March 16. The Governor landed in a ship’s boat, escorted by a large war canoe, and was presented with an address by Europeans. Some 400 Natives, in war dress, gave the war dance, after which His Excellency replied, and invited all old Maoris to gather round him and have their photos taken. The party were entertained'at lunch by white [residents, and then more speeches were made in the hall, bat no new ground was touched. The talk mostly had connection with Native rights under the Treaty of Waitangi. One old chief specially thanked the Premier for obtaining the old age pensions for them. At the conclusion the Governor and the Premier shook hands with all the old chiefs present. The Tutanekai stays here till to-morrow. Whangarei wi I be the next port of call.
