Admiral Canevaro, speaking in the Chamber of Deputies, said the Powers were well disposed at the outset towards the Italian demands in China. Italy, rdter the insult, promised to quiescently await Sir Claud MacDonald’s effort to secure a reacceptance by China of the Note, with the view of making reparation. Unfortunately Signor Martino, the Italian Minister, in the meantime, on his own initiative, sent an ultimatum demanding the cession of Sarauam • Bay. Hence his action was disavowed, lest Italy should be accused of acting in bad faith. Italy would not precipitate matters, but the Tsung-li-yamen must be induced to negotiate.
