Owing to indisposition Mr R. J. Barnes was unable to attend the morning sitting, bat at 4 p.m., feeling somewhat better, he decided to play his game against Mr R. A. Cleland. The game was of very short duration, occupying less than an hour, Mr Cleland offered the Evans Gambit, which Mr Barnes declined to accept. White continued his attack with the advancement of the gambit pawn to knight's fifth, and soon had his opponent in difficulties, Black resigning at the tenth move.
