They voted for tho increase because the police are deserving of it, and had no intention of embarrassing the Government. When the House met Sir G. Turner said the Government had decided, owing to important events pending, including the early floating of a loan, they could not, without tho gravest reasons, cause a crisis. It was intended to bring the matter forward in such a manner as to allow the House to reverse its decision. The Government could not see their way clear to allow increased expenditure by increasing the pay of the police.
